Not A Mother’s Day Breakfast Tradition Recap

It’s a little upsetting that I can’t write one of my traditional Mother’s Day breakfast recap posts. I briefly mentioned in yesterday’s workout recap that our breakfast didn’t happen.

I did think ahead to call Premier Diner on Saturday to confirm their Mother’s Day breakfast menu. It’s a good thing I did that because they weren’t making the baked oatmeal or offering their breakfast specials.

On Mother’s Day, we tried for the takeout option from Maureen’s Kitchen but we couldn’t get through by phone. We tried taking a drive there to order in person but when we arrived, they said they weren’t taking any more orders for the day.

Uh-huh.

I was okay with this. Really, I was. I mean, it was upsetting but it’s really not a huge deal in comparison to real problems during this pandemics, you know?

My son tried to suggest basic pancakes or something from another place but I said no. I like what I like. I don’t need random pancakes or plates of challah french toast just because. And to stop for bagels was silly since we already had fresh bagels in the house. It was easy enough to just go home. Not to mention, it’s not like we were able to just walk in on a whim to eat somewhere else. It’s a process to do ANYTHING right now. You have to decide in advance where you want to do take out from, find the phone number and online menu, try to place the order over the phone or on the website, then go to wait outside for pick up. It just wasn’t worth the process to me at that point.

Don’t even get me started on what went on during our attempt to pick up Mother’s Day dinner. Here’s a picture of the organized chaos by the mall where The Cheesecake Factory and PF Chang’s are located. I realize this is completely hard on everyone – patrons and restaurant workers. It’s just a crummy situation and we are all trying to make the best of it. At least I have my blog as an outlet for venting my frustrations in a way that may resonate with someone else, or at the very least, make you laugh. I always keep things light and find the humor but the food situation on Sunday had me almost in tears by dinner when I saw this parking lot.

trying to get takeout

Anyway, after stopping by my parents during the day to give my mom her Mother’s Day present (more on that in a minute), we did go for ice cream at Marvel as I mentioned yesterday. It was nice to take a ride down to the beach and even nicer because my son drove so I was able to look at some scenery. He’s getting really good with the driving thing. If anything positive has come out of this quarantine, it has been the ability to take my son driving every day without much traffic. It has really helped his driving skills (and my patience/fear level).

If you look closely and zoom in to the left of the photo, you can see the New York City skyline. It’s always cool to me when you can spot the city from random places on Long Island.

Lido Beach

Here’s my cup of vanilla and chocolate swirl again with the chocolate sprinkles. This was my order of choice mainly because a simple cup of ice cream with sprinkles is a happy item to order. Something is upsetting (like the Mother’s Day breakfast situation) = fix it with sprinkles.

marvel ice cream

So getting back to what I got my mom (and myself) for Mother’s Day. I usually get my mom flowers for Mother’s Day because she loves Peonies. This year, I decided we both needed a new Stoney Clover pouch. I’ll always find a reason for a new pouch!

The Stoney Clover pouch obsession is real. I love that you can use the customizer tool on the website to test out colors, pouches, and patch combinations.

The clear Stoney Clover travel pouch is a perfect addition to our collection. The quality of Stoney Clover pouches and products is incredible and the size can be used for so many things. The pouches make the best gifts too! You just can’t go wrong.

Usually, I go pink but the sky color from Stoney Clover has been calling my name for a while so I ordered the sky travel pouch for myself with sky glitter heart patch. I’m already busy designing my next Stoney Clover pouch and patch combination. Stoney Clover just launched their new tropical collection and I want them all. The colors make me so happy!

stoney clover clear pouch

My mom loves purple more thank pink so this travel pouch is the one I designed for her, in the grape color.

I really wanted the clear travel pouch at the moment because I knew it would be perfect for holding all of my newly purchased manicure tools and nail polishes since I’m still stuck home doing my own nails for the near future. It makes me happy to use this pouch when doing my nails.

Did you catch my Instagram story yesterday?

Harsh? More like honest. Keep it to yourself. Really. We don’t want to hear it unless we ask about it.

However, even though I told Heather to keep it to herself as well, I also told her to please call me before and after her first hair salon appointment yesterday so I could hear how it went.

I’ll be back tomorrow with recent meals including the dinner we finally had on Mother’s Day.

Friday Favorites (Always Loved Tie-Dye + Fashion Finds)

Happy Friday! I’m excited for the weekend as we have our Mother’s Day breakfast to look forward to on Sunday. And, I don’t see a sign of rain after today, either. It won’t be too warm but that’s fine, so long as the sun comes out.

In honor of Mother’s Day and Friday Favorites, let’s look once again at one of my favorite pictures with my little boy. Is it any surprise that his first birthday outfit was tie-dye? I dressed the kid in tie-dye for as long as I could. I would still dress him in tie-dye at the age of 16 if he let me. This blue Flapdoodles tie-dye sweatsuit was my most favorite outfit of his from when he was little.

This picture is currently the lock screen photo on my phone.

benji

These days, when I am busy yelling at my son for something ridiculous, he likes to grab my phone to show me this picture as a way to distract me. But look, it’s your little boy! Tell me again about my blue tie-dye outfit and little shoes! He knows how to get me to change my tune every time.

I’m also thinking back to one of my favorite posts that I’ve written which revolves around how I DID NOT WORKOUT as a new mom. It’s not discussed often enough that it’s OKAY TO NOT HAVE A WORKOUT ROUTINE during those early months (even years) of your children’s lives. Like, it’s fine and great if it works for you but there was no way it was going to work for me and it was honestly all okay. As I explain in detail in the post, I didn’t want a treadmill in my house, didn’t want to think about a workout routine, and was more active on a regular basis back then chasing him and pushing him around in a stroller than any other time in my life.

Earlier this week I spoke about being a routine person. It’s okay if that routine changes, and evolves, or even ends up on hold. I knew I was a routine person, I also knew that I would return to a formal workout routine once my son was a little older. I went right back to a workout routine when he started preschool. I wouldn’t change that decision for the world. We had a different morning routine that didn’t involve formal exercise for me but certainly kept us busy and active!

Please note once again in the below picture from my son’s second birthday party at Gymboree, his shirt was in fact tie-dye.

it's okay to not workout as a new mom

Speaking of tie-dye, some fashion finds today!

It’s about that time for swimsuits (well, almost – not yet in New York, but almost).

I like this Aqua Tie-Dyed Triangle Bikini Top & Tie-Dyed String Bikini Bottom.

And I like this tie-dye bikini. It’s like a white and berry mix of color and also has a matching sarong.

Here’s another Tie-Dye Bandeau Bikini Top with matching bottom! It goes with this long sarong. Tie-dye is trending big in swimwear this season.

Oh wait, I once wrote a great post (if I do say so myself) about shopping for swimsuits. It shouldn’t be a struggle. Here’s my opinion on shopping for swimsuits and how I approach it.

Beyond tie-dye…

I love the Aqua loungewear sets because they can totally be worn out of the house too. This Love is Love set is perfect in the white with red and I also like this variation in the white with black.

Shout out to Splendid once again, especially for this V-neck tee and the classic tank. I just got the V-neck in the lavender and it’s so pretty. I do roll the sleeves a little but that’s because I’m petite. Speaking of petite, the tank is available in XXS and although I don’t like to speak sizes, I’m mentioning this because it fits me so well on top in terms of strap length and under the arms. It’s really hard for me to find perfect-fitting tank tops with straps that don’t slide and don’t buckle under the arm. This tank in this size is perfect!

Splendid is running 30% off this weekend with code TREAT and oh gosh, they have new tie-dye joggers in stock. I love that they are thermal material too.

Mother’s Day Breakfast Tradition Will Look Different This Year!

It’s that time of year again! Mother’s Day breakfast tradition time!

If you have been reading for a while, you know that my son and I have a very special Mother’s Day breakfast tradition. It’s a really big deal for us. Well, a really big deal for me. I’m not sure that my son cares as much as I do, I think he totes along for the food. That’s fine, one day he will appreciate the tradition. And me.

So the story goes like this. On Mother’s Day in 2010, when my son was 6 years old and up at the crack of dawn as most kids are at that age, I suggested we go out for breakfast in an effort to do something different for Mother’s Day. And there you have it – early morning Mother’s Day breakfast tradition established.

diner pancakes

It’s now 2020 which means this will be our 11th annual Mother’s Day breakfast tradition. The only issue is, we can’t actually go out to eat this year. Who could have ever predicted this would be our current situation?

We have revised our breakfast plan and decided upon takeout from Premier Diner.

I didn’t start my blog until January 2013 which means I do not have pictures from the first three years of our breakfast tradition. However, I do have Mother’s Day breakfast recaps here on the blog since 2013! Let’s take a look at them today, okay?!

As you may recall, we bounce between two breakfast locations:

maureen's kitchen coffee

Sometimes I want to add a new Mother’s Day breakfast spot option to our choices but my son doesn’t allow it.

Who am I kidding though, it’s not like I am one for variety. As it is, either place we choose, I only choose between two breakfast items:

  • Baked Oatmeal
  • Whole wheat blueberry pancakes

It’s always a tough decision!

So let’s look back at my choices over the years since Mother’s Day 2013.

Mother’s Day Breakfast at Premier Diner  2013

I remember stopping for our Mother’s Day breakfast at Premier Diner before taking my son to Hebrew school. This was still three years before his Bar Mitzvah!

I’m sure it was a tough decision for me but I went with the whole wheat blueberry pancakes. YUM. These pancakes are always so delicious.

Baked oatmeal this time! I definitely tossed my options back and forth for two weeks before ultimately deciding what I would order for breakfast.

Mother’s Day Breakfast at Maureen’s Kitchen 2015

We made the decision to go to Maureen’s Kitchen for Mother’s Day this year for the first time in our breakfast tradition history. I remember we sat at the counter and watched them make all of the pancakes. I like doing things like that.

Maureen's Kitchen

I had the baked oatmeal. I’m still unsure who serves the better batch of baked oatmeal. I used to say Maureen’s Kitchen but Premier Diner’s baked oatmeal is so good. It’s really a tough call.

My son’s pancakes were so pretty.

Mother’s Day Breakfast at Maureen’s Kitchen 2016

If I recall correctly, I wanted to go to Premier Diner but my son chose Maureen’s Kitchen. Instead of baked oatmeal, I ordered the whole wheat blueberry pancakes. Premier Diner makes better whole wheat pancakes for sure. Don’t get me wrong. Maureen’s Kitchen is like one of the best places EVER for breakfast. But, the whole wheat blueberry pancakes, at least on this particular day, were not even close to as good as Premier Diner. I hate to really say it out loud (because Maureen’s is just so delicious for everything) but it was true.

Back to Maureen’s Kitchen! I should mention that we get to Maureen’s literally when they open at 7:00 AM, otherwise, you are going to wait if you arrive a minute later!

Maureen’s yet again! I’m fine with it although I did try to go to the diner. My son is big on selecting Maureen’s. He loves the whole experience.

His pancakes deserve the extra picture. How pretty!

Mother’s Day Breakfast at Premier Diner 2019

I was so happy when my son agreed on going back to Premier diner for our breakfast. I do love Maureen’s but I really enjoy the diner’s whole wheat blueberry walnut pancakes with the side of egg whites and bananas.

I’m really going to miss my unlimited mugs of coffee this Sunday on Mother’s Day. That’s one thing you can’t get with taking out! However, since we aren’t rushing to beat the crowd to sit down, I think we can leave a little later in the morning to pick up our breakfast. Now that my son is older, he sleeps much later and I have learned to not like to rush out the door so I do appreciate the extra time in the morning. I will definitely have a recap of breakfast to share next week!

Workouts From Week (higher mileage!) + 10th Annual Mother’s Day Breakfast

I know we care most about my Mother’s Day breakfast tradition but first, let’s chat workouts from the week.

A few things to note:

I was all about time on my feet this week. Going into the week, I knew I felt like running. Not so much about speed or workouts specifically, just about getting back a bit to my old self with some distance. Nothing crazy here and not exactly high mileage (I guess high mileage is really a relative term), but higher than my recent usual. It felt so good, too!

No matter my weekly mileage, I am pretty confident in saying that running 4 days a week is my happy maximum. Not sure how I used to run 5-6 days a week, every week. While okay, maybe once in a blue moon I may at some point run 5 days in a week, that will be a rare occurrence. 4 days, at most, seems to work best for me and feel right. It’s not too much, while not too little, and can be spaced out well enough that I only have to run 2 days in a row. I don’t really like running days in a row, which is something I’ve learned in the last year of running less.

I ever so randomly developed what I think was a (barely) 24 virus type of thing on Thursday. Out of nowhere, I had a sore throat and body aches. But that was it. I slept it off and then it was gone. No cold, no stomach virus type symptoms, no real fever. I appreciate my immune system, it very rarely lets me down for long.

All week I had intentions to run 10 miles on Saturday. The quick virus thing threatened to mess with my plan but I was completely fine even by Friday, so on Saturday, I did set out for 10 miles, knowing I could stop if I didn’t feel well. I was fine.

Monday – 7 Miles

I didn’t have to drive my son to school today plus the sun was shining early so it was amazing to get outside! In my head, I planned for 6 miles but still had a few minutes when I was done so I continued on for 7.

7 miles

Tuesday – 54 Min Pure Barre (arm-focused)

I say this every time but arm-focused really means a full body workout with extra emphasis on arms. So challenging but so effective in the results which is why I love Pure Barre so much.

Wednesday – 6 Miles

I definitely felt yesterday’s Pure Barre workout in my legs so I went easy, naturally picking it up a bit as the run went along.

6 mile run

Thursday – 3.25 Miles

Just an easy run, a little over 30 minutes.

Friday – 30 Min Pure Barre

Saturday – 10 Miles

I was looking for an easy run and ideally, 10 miles total. I aimed for 7 assuming that once I was at 7, I could decide if I was going to continue. Since my phone wasn’t at low battery yet (totally need a new phone) and I was feeling great, I went on for 10 miles. This run passed by so quickly!

10 mile run

Sunday – 10th Annual Mother’s Day Breakfast Tradition!

We opted for breakfast at the Premier Diner for the first time in a few years for our Mother’s Day breakfast.

It was raining which was actually a good thing because it meant we could leave slightly later in the morning and not worry about an early crowd. I think nicer weather would have brought more people out earlier in the morning.

premier diner

I always have to choose between the baked oatmeal and the whole wheat blueberry walnut pancakes that I love. This time, I went with the pancakes.

The whole wheat blueberry walnut pancakes are served with eggs whites and bananas. So delicious!

I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day and that the weather was better for you than it was for us. Relentless rain that isn’t letting up I think until later on tomorrow! Ugh, treadmill it is for me this morning.

What I Bought At Sephora + Mother’s Day Breakfast Tradition!

It’s Friday! It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday!

Let’s chat quickly about what I ended up grabbing during the Sephora sale before getting to anything else.

[show_shopthepost_widget id=”3573212″]

Dior Capture Dreamskin Fresh & Perfect Cushion SPF 50 Refill – A must. You know this by now.

NARS Afterglow Lip Balm –  Been wearing it every day.

Drunk Elephant Rise & Glow Brightening Duo and Drunk Elephant Night Bright Resurfacing Duo. I did my research and decided these serum duos were what I needed. So far, I am very happy. They are priced well, contain crazy quality ingredients, and the bottles are decently sized to last a while since you only use a drop at a time.

Living Proof Dry Shampoo-  This dry shampoo is Sephora’s top-selling dry shampoo and I can see why. It is a life-changer right now.  I had my highlights done over the weekend so I really didn’t want to wash my hair after my sweaty run the other day. I used this dry shampoo and it totally revitalized my hair like no other dry shampoo ever has. I’m actually in shock. Definitely recommend it.

Tarte Mini Double Take Eye Liner- I bought the mini version of this eyeliner to make sure I like it. So far, so good. It’s two-sided and I’m very impressed with the liquid liner side – usually, I can’t apply those lines well but this one goes on smoothly and makes it seem like I have a steady hand.

Supergoop Shimmershade SPF 30 Cream Eye Shadow   – I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS EYE SHADOW. It’s the perfect cream eye shadow for every day and has SUNSCREEN. It’s exactly what I needed right now. A simple eye shadow that looks nice with liner and mascara. I love the slight shimmer and how well it goes on –super smooth since it’s a cream but doesn’t crease or anything like that. YOU NEED IT.

Mother’s Day Breakfast Tradition!

It’s that time of year again.

maureen's kitchen breakfast

Longtime readers know that my son and I have our early morning Mother’s Day breakfast tradition which is now in its 10th year!!

I started our early morning Mother’s Day breakfast tradition in 2010 when my son was 6 years old. We went to the Premier diner for a special Mother’s Day breakfast to give us something to do so early in the morning (since he was at that age of waking up early). Ever since then, it has become our thing, switching between Maureen’s Kitchen and Premier Diner. The funny part now though is that my son sleeps late and I hate rushing out the door so early in the morning.

He loves to set his alarm for our breakfast but I have actually asked him if maybe we can go later in the morning so I don’t have to get up.

He said no. So there’s that.

We are choosing between a few new spots (per my request) or our old favorites of Maureen’s Kitchen or the diner. We haven’t decided just yet but I will be sure to recap next week!

breakfast at the diner

Here’s our rundown of Mother’s Day Breakfast Traditions since I started the blog in 2013.

2013: Premier Diner

2014: Premier Diner

2015: Maureen’s Kitchen

2016: Maureen’s Kitchen

2017: Maureen’s Kitchen

2018: Maureen’s Kitchen

So you probably already know this but I am not one of those gushy mushy mothers (nor am I a part of the philosophical Instagram mothers – what is with that? Everyone is not only an expert but a haiku and sonnet writing motherhood poet?) but I will say the time does go by so fast.

My bunny was such a nice little boy. I mean, he still is, he’s just much bigger now and thinks he knows everything, even more than the know-it-all nature he possessed before the age of 3.

it's okay to not workout as a new mom

I was talking to someone the other day, someone who complimented me about how nice my son is.

I said – yes, he is nice. He’s nice and super smart, a really good kid, BUT ANNOYING. And that’s the truth about kids, isn’t it? No one likes to say it but I have no problem writing it because it’s true.  They can be annoying. Some more than others.

Does my own mother think I am annoying? I doubt it. I’m one of the few who isn’t annoying. 🙂

So while yes I love my child and I’m so grateful he made me a mother, I tell him all the time that he’s annoying me and it’s okay because he knows exactly what he is doing at all times. Not only does he know it, I think he annoys with pride. It’s part of his charm.

You know, like how he continues to play hockey in the house? It’s like nails on a chalkboard to me. He knows it and still does it. Only a mother can continue to love him anyway after the pucks and balls hit my bedroom door, the walls, or, through the front window. And this trait, being able to love no matter what is really what makes you a mother. Or a parent for that matter.

benji

In fact, one of my son’s teachers told him just this week that he will raise his class participation grade if he STOPS participating. We can’t stop laughing about this one. HA. Only my kid. I’m telling you he is annoyingly one of a kind.

Since it’s Mother’s Day and all, and because I look for any opportunity to revisit the below photo from my son’s first birthday party, let’s chat about it again because I think I have a few new things to discuss.

benji

He was my best little friend.

I always had him trending in tie-dye. I still would if he let me.

Do you see his little Robeez slippers with the trains on them? These are the perfect “shoes” if you are going to put shoes on a baby/toddler learning to walk. You are not supposed to put babies/toddlers in shoes so fast! It pains me when I see shoes on babies/toddlers who are not walking yet. These slippers were the best for covering his feet to protect them from the ground/cold while still learning to walk. While he was already taking his steps in the weeks prior to his first birthday, I didn’t get him actual shoes until a few weeks later. You should wait until they are walking a few weeks solidly before switching to real shoes.

Side note: I keep those little train slippers in my night table drawer ever since he stopped wearing them.

Do you notice I had pink rhinestone sandals on my feet? Some things never change.

Oh, and I still wear that Sanctuary denim shirt. No matter how often I clean out my closet, certain things stay.

Have a great weekend and a very Happy Mother’s Day!

What did you end up getting from Sephora during the sale?

Do you have a Mother’s Day tradition too?

Mother’s Day Breakfast At Maureen’s Kitchen

Our 9th annual Mother’s Day breakfast tradition is in the books!

No joke, if you don’t arrive at Maureen’s Kitchen when they open at 7:00 AM, you are going to wait. We pulled in at 6:58 AM to see a line at the door. If you get there at 7:15, trust me when I say you will be waiting for a table and the wait only gets worse from there.

How tall is my bunny? I can’t even believe it sometimes.

I sort of knew what I would order but I looked at the menu anyway.

maureen's kitchen coffee

My son’s pancakes stole the show. On the specials menu for yesterday was a listing for “Everything But The Kitchen Sink” pancakes. Our server explained that the pancakes included white chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, Oreo’s, m&m’s, and caramel. Not exactly up my alley but my son went for it!

maureen's kitchen pancakes

I stuck with a bowl of the baked oatmeal served with a side of milk that you pour over the oatmeal. Perfect as always.

maureen's kitchen breakfast

My mom asked me if the breakfast tradition I have with my son is still so special. I said yes, it’s just different because I’m not solving the problem of what to do with him so early in the morning since he now sleeps late! Funny how things change.

We love our special breakfast and we love that we don’t have to wait for a table but it definitely makes for a long day ahead! The good thing now though is that we get home and my son goes back to sleep. When he was younger, I would have to jump from activity to activity to keep him occupied after breakfast. HA.

Later in the day, we headed over to my parents’ house. I had picked up my mom’s favorite peonies from Whole Foods (talk about waiting in line, I waited on two lines for those flowers) and then my mom and I went shopping.

A stop for a quick lunch at The Little Beet.

little beet

I didn’t actually buy anything but my mom grabbed some of the recommended e.l.f. skincare that I suggested and I went back to Nordstrom for one of those swimsuit cover ups that I wanted – of course it was gone.

My son and I ended up home for dinner because he wasn’t feeling great so we left my parents earlier than expected. His allergies are really bad this season!

I hope everyone had a nice weekend and a nice Mother’s Day. 🙂

9th Annual Mother’s Day Breakfast Tradition

Today’s Friday Favorites post is all about my excitement for this Sunday as it’s time for our 9th annual Mother’s Day Breakfast Tradition!!!!

Long time readers already know that Mother’s Day has basically become my favorite day of the year — and so much of it has to do with our breakfast tradition.

My son and I started our early morning Mother’s Day breakfast tradition back in 2010 which was the first Mother’s Day after my divorce. Well, technically it was the point in time when I was going through the divorce process and we had moved from our house to where we live now.

This will be our 9th year in a row for our Mother’s Day breakfast tradition. I cannot even believe it. Where did the time go? No, seriously, where?

When we first started our breakfast tradition, my son was only six years old. It’s crazy for me to realize now just how young he was then!

When my son was little, he used to wake up so early that I didn’t know what to do with him in the morning. We would put it a full day of art projects and games before 8:00 AM, which most parents can understand.

So for Mother’s Day in 2010, I came up with the idea of…

Hey! Let’s beat everyone to the Premier Diner on Mother’s Day and do something special for breakfast since we are up at the crack of dawn anyway!

breakfast at the diner

We enjoyed it so much that it became our tradition to go out super early for our breakfast every year on Mother’s Day just the two of us. I think our special breakfast means so very much and is truly the highlight and meaning of my Mother’s Day which is why I couldn’t even attempt to put together a Mother’s Day gift guide for the blog. I see all of the gift guides floating around (and we know I love to shop) BUT actual presents in place of an experience like this are kind of meaningless. It’s all about special experiences, as especially as a mom, you know?

We discuss our Mother’s Day breakfast tradition all year, trying to determine where we will go for our special meal. Will we repeat the Premier Diner? Go to Maureen’s Kitchen? Try a new breakfast spot?

Maureen's Kitchen Pancakes

Since my son is now older, he doesn’t wake up as early as he used to when he was younger. This is sort of a problem because I feel bad having him wake up early on a non-school day but he doesn’t seem to mind. He still wants to be out the door and at our breakfast destination by 7:00 AM!

The last three years have been all about Maureen’s Kitchen. I think that’s where we are headed on Sunday although we have yet to make that final decision. There are a few new options for this year but I’m not sure if we are going to do something different!

Of course I will share all of the details from our Mother’s Day breakfast tradition in Monday’s post. One of the best parts about having this blog is that I have all of these fun moments documented!

3 things you have planned for this weekend?!

Mother’s Day Breakfast at Maureen’s Kitchen (Plus Recent Eats)

Another Mother’s Day breakfast tradition in the books!

You may have already seen a sneak peek of our breakfast at Maureen’s Kitchen yesterday on Instagram.

My son chose Maureen’s Kitchen for the third year in a row. We have learned that you must get there when they open to avoid the lines. So at 7:00 am, we were there! I honestly wasn’t going to wake my son so early this year but he got up and ready on his own.

I went with the baked oatmeal this year and I must say, it was the best bowl of baked oatmeal I think I have ever had.

One year the waitress at Maureen’s Kitchen suggested fresh blueberries on the side to go with the baked oatmeal so I ordered it that way again.

I would love to know how they make their baked oatmeal although I would never come close to replicating it. It is served with a side of warmed milk. It is truly out of this world!

My son even let me take a picture of his breakfast.

His order included eggs, bacon, sausage and his choice of pancakes. He chose Oreo pancakes.

Other Recent Eats!

I made a special trip to Panera one day to work and have lunch. I don’t get there as often as I once did but I still like to work from there when I can.

When you give me a gift card to The Cheesecake Factory, I will use it immediately even if I was just there a few days prior.

I had a great Red Mango parfait on Saturday which I enjoyed while walking the mall. In case you didn’t know the toppings in my parfait, it’s always original yogurt with strawberries, blueberries, pumpkin flax granola and dark chocolate chips.

We finally tried the new Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza that opened near my house.

There are a bazillion great pizza places near me but Anthony’s is a little bit different since it’s coal-fired cooked and you can’t order by the slice as it’s served by the pie.

I ordered the house salad to start. Salads are also served family style – this is the small.

We chose two pizzas but honestly, if we all could have agreed on toppings, one large pie would have been enough. I chose a small basic pizza with mushrooms and we also ordered a large meatball and ricotta pie.

So I liked Anthony’s but I prefer our traditional New York pizzas by the slice. Would I go again? Sure. I think it’s a little bit pricey for what it is but on occasion, it’s a good place. The bar area is nice too with good-sized televisions for watching hockey games so that’s a plus in my book.

Major Flashback Post: A few years ago we had dinner at Salvatore’s which is the best brick oven pizza in my opinion here on Long Island. I need to get back there soon!

Mother’s Day Breakfast Tradition

Mother’s Day is Sunday and it has basically become my favorite day of the year.

In case you didn’t already know from previous years here on the blog, my son and I have a very special Mother’s Day breakfast tradition.

We started our early morning breakfast tradition back in 2010 which was the first Mother’s Day after my divorce. Well, technically it was after the divorce process started and we moved out of the house to where we still live now.

This will be our 8th year in a row for our Mother’s Day breakfast tradition and I can’t even believe it! When we first started celebrating Mother’s Day like this, my son was only six years old! How weird does that sound now?!

When he was little, he used to wake up so early that I figured, Hey! Let’s beat everyone to the Premier Diner on Mother’s Day and do something special for breakfast since we are up at the crack of dawn anyway!

Our Mother’s Day breakfast tradition has become something we talk about all year. The last few years have been a mix between the Premier Diner and Maureen’s Kitchen. We have yet to decide where we will go this Sunday morning.

Will we try something new? Will we go to the diner? Maureen’s Kitchen? What are we having? Will I have baked oatmeal? Pancakes? Something totally different?

Are we waking up early to be there at 7:00 am or should we aim for more of a brunch this year?

It’s a big dilemma now that my son is a teenager and actually sleeps late. Why would I want to wake him? Who subjects themselves to a teenager so early in the morning by choice?

But why would we want to wait in line for our special breakfast tradition once it’s super crowded?

Of course I will share all of the details from our Mother’s Day breakfast tradition on Monday. I always do! In fact, one of the best parts about having this blog is that I have all of these fun moments documented.

Previous Mother’s Day’s Posts:

2016: Mother’s Day plus Week In Review < – We went to Maureen’s Kitchen (at 7:00 am!) because we love to sit at the counter and watch the pancakes cook! I had blueberry pancakes instead of baked oatmeal.

2015: Weekend/Mother’s Day Highlights < – Maureen’s Kitchen this year  for a change for the baked oatmeal.

2014: Mother’s Day & Crumbs Cupcakes < – Our favorite Premier Diner for breakfast (baked oatmeal!) and Crumbs cupcakes for dessert at night.

2013: Mother’s Day Happiness < – The Premier Diner before Hebrew School plus the cute poem my son wrote about me – I forgot all about it!! He even references my love for cake and running. 🙂

Do you have any special family traditions that center around meals?

Do you prefer pancakes or waffles?

3 things you are doing this weekend?

Thursday Things

ice cream candle

  1. Have you seen the adorable new ice cream collection from Paper Source? My son knew that I liked it so he made sure I received a few of the ice cream things for Mother’s Day including this soy cream candle! It smells so good and really turns into a delicious body cream.
  2. He also made me a nice Mother’s Day card this year. He thanked me for everything I do AND for his future dog. What dog?! I am not getting a dog?!
  3. He should have thanked me for writing his book report for Hebrew School. Man, am I ever glad that’s done, like I don’t have enough to write every day? I got 100% on it!
  4. My biggest pet peeve in life right now is the role of plastic wrap. I have told you this before. I am plastic wrapped challenged. I did really well for a few months and then I messed things up, as in, the plastic is now all uneven which means it no longer tears off the roll.
  5. It really takes me some time to adjust to the Islanders season ending. I miss my team and can’t switch my attention over to the Yankees that quickly.
  6. I was all ready to take a Pure Barre platform class this Sunday morning but guess what – it’s already sold out. And the wait list is full too. This is not okay!
  7. I tried to better prioritize and manage my working time this week to be more productive and focused. I feel like I jump too much from task to task on my computer so I attempted to set time limits for working uninterrupted on the blog and then moving on to other things. No looking at my phone, no checking email during those set times. It worked really well!
  8. I thought who I was yesterday when I left the house in shorts only to look down in the daylight to see all of the spots on my legs that I clearly have missed shaving all winter. Back in the house I went for the leggings.
