My Baby’s Birthday, He Thought I Was Famous, Bridal Fashion Week (TOL)

thinking out loud

I am officially the mother of a teenager today. Well, technically, my life as a mother of a teenager begins at 12:47 pm which is the exact time that my bunny (remember that’s my son’s nickname) entered the world 13 years ago today which was also the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur that year.

When I look at my son, I still see his baby bunny face from his first birthday when he was all proud to wear his airbrushed Elmo shirt and birthday crown.

But now he is taller than me to the point where I still go to hide the chocolate and candy on the top shelves when it’s me who is on tippy toes and him who reaches up to help me get them down.

Each year that I have had this blog I have written something so nice and reflective on my baby’s birthday but this year, my brain is just fried by the Bar Mitzvah. In fact, the kid is lucky I remembered that he has an actual birthday on October 6 rather than just assume his birthday is next week, on October 15 (the date of his Bar Mitzvah).

Not to mention that right now I am focused on writing my speech which I have to give at his Bar Mitzvah service. I started the Word document weeks ago but it’s basically a blank page at the moment. I have some faith in myself though that I will get it done. The writer in me just has to pull through. 🙂

I have given plenty of thought to the idea of scheduling guest posts during the height of the Bar Mitzvah hoopla next week but then changed my mind. My plan now is to post as often as I can next week and the week after while cutting myself some slack.

If I miss a few days of posting it will be okay. I just want the option to post and share what’s going on in real-time rather than have scheduled posts of my own or topics provided by someone else. I want to be able to look back on what I was doing, thinking and saying while also sharing the OMG nature of this exciting time in our lives.

My biggest fear at the moment is that I won’t get pictures with my phone during the party.

I am going to have to designate a friend (Meaghan if you are reading, this is for you) or maybe my dad to take some photos with their phones so I have something to share with you guys fairly quickly after the party.

If anything, they need to get pictures of the desserts because we just CANNOT wait for the photographer’s photos to come back when it comes to dessert. In fact, I have taken the dessert so seriously that I even listed it on the info sheet for the photographer in big letters making it clear that the pictures of the food really matter to me! SKIP THE PEOPLE AND GET THE FOOD SHOTS PLEASE!

In other news:

I was in the city yesterday for Bridal Fashion Week! We were at Kleinfeld to do the fashion show check-in but I was also able to get backstage which was super cool!

I haven’t had a chance to edit all of my photos just yet but I just love wedding gowns.

I wish I got a picture of the guy on the street who thought I was famous and asked for my autograph. He told me that he even had the pen if I could wait a minute.

I know, right?! How funny! I wonder who he thought I was? I am assuming Renee Zellweger because that’s the only famous person I look like?

And no, I did not stop to ask him who he thought I was. People here don’t even say hello to you if they don’t know you so when someone says ANYTHING to you on a city street and you don’t know them, you just keep walking.

If you are wondering what the plan is tonight for my son’s birthday, I am not totally sure. He hasn’t decided where he wants to go for dinner just yet. All I know is that I have to get him a vanilla cake filled and frosted with chocolate fudge frosting < – That’s my boy, I raised him well!

I will be sure to recap the birthday fun though. In the meantime, here are the previous year’s birthday recaps. We have gone to Vincent’s for the last three years for dinner and there’s always a good cake or dessert.

This is why I love having my blog! It helps me to keep track of all of the important stuff in our lives, like birthday cake.

Hi! I'm Meredith. Join me while I run and cook my way through single motherhood. It is always an adventure trying to teach my 12 year old son the benefits of an active lifestyle combined with healthy eating while of course, still leaving room for dessert.

  1. Happy birthday to your son! I cant believe he is 13 even though I don’t know him, I feel like when I started reading your blog he was still a little kid. My birthday is next week but I no longer get excited about it and actually haven’t really realize it was coming up so quickly until this week.

    1. aw thanks! time really does fly by, I can’t believe he is 13. I see my first birthday recap on the blog is from when he turned 10! so, he was only 9 when I started my blog. seems so long ago in some ways but also like time flew by

  2. That’s cool that that guy asked you for your autograph! 🙂 And I love wedding gowns too; not all of them, but some. They are so pretty.

Happy Birthday to your son! I hope he has an amazing birthday, and don’t worry about having to blog next week unless you have time. We would love to read a recap too, if you don’t have time to post.

  3. Happy Birthday to your little guy! Well, I guess not so -little- anymore, but I’m betting it’ll always feel that way 🙂 And I totally know what you mean about not wanting to schedule posts ahead of time. I can’t do it either, and I think it’s totally okay to make some time off blogging!

  4. Happy Birthday to your son. My husband and dad share an October birthday and my nephew and two best friends from college also have October birthdays, so we’re celebrating all month long. Definitely have a friend take photos during the Bar Mitzvah, you want to be in the moment!

  5. I hope you have a wonderful birthday celebration!

My favorite type of birthday cake is a yellow box cake with pink frosting. I know that pink is just colored white but it just doesn’t taste the same to me. 🙂
