Back to reality we go today! After a four-day weekend (we were off for Rosh Hashanah), it’s nice to know it’s already Wednesday.
The next few days will be pretty crazy but at least the weekend is in sight. Somehow I still have so much to do for the Bar Mitzvah which is mind-boggling when I think about how much I did in advance.
Anyway, before I start rambling about my Bar Mitzvah planning to do list, let’s take a look at what I ate on Monday.
Breakfast:
I had the usual oatmeal with banana for breakfast. I added a few frozen blueberries plus some Skoop B Strong for protein after taking the picture.
I am still not eating peanut butter since that virus almost two weeks ago!
Lunch:
A fresh french toast bagel, toasted and then served with eggs and a drop of jelly is definitely my most favorite lunch right now and probably my favorite meal of the day. You know I typically hate lunch because I never know what I want to eat so loving this bagel combination right now is a wonderful feeling.
I really don’t care if bagels are considered empty calories or simple carbohydrates. I don’t even care if they processed and lacking in vitamins and minerals. Right now, bagels make me happy, satisfy my appetite and do not give me a blood sugar crash. So take that nutrition studies and articles!
I think I will continue on my french toast bagel a day trend until I no longer crave it. See, that’s the thing – the craving part. If you are craving a bagel, trying to eat whole grain toast, an english muffin, or something else “healthier” than a bagel when you want a bagel just won’t work.
Nutrition matters, sure, but so does being happy with what you eat.
Dinner:
We went over to my friend Lisa’s house for the second night of Rosh Hashanah. Lisa always throws together a wonderful meal but this time, as I told her, she officially became a real live Jewish adult lady because she made her first brisket all by herself.
We tend to think that brisket is made by the real Jewish adult women, you know, the mothers and grandmothers. Not us kids, even though we technically aren’t kids and have kids ourselves, we still think we are the kids.
Lisa made the brisket this year (and basically everything else) and everyone was raving (including my son!) about how delicious and perfect it was so she asked me to take a picture of it as proof that it happened.
Please note that Lisa is also a vegetarian, making her brisket skills even more impressive.
I ate the carrots and potatoes which had all of the flavor of the brisket.
For the record, I have yet to make a brisket. My mother does things like that. She uses my grandmother’s recipe. Am I supposed to want to make a brisket? Maybe when I am 40. I am just not ready to be an adult yet.
Dessert:
I brought a chocolate babka for dessert. Who else remembers the Seinfeld episode with the chocolate babka?!
Lisa put me in charge of cutting the chocolate babka which was great because I just kept cutting myself slices. The chocolate fudgy filling is ridiculous.
I think I prefer to learn how to make a chocolate babka from scratch rather than learn how to cook a brisket. Seems more up my alley, don’t you think?

Bagels are just something I could never give up. Although its easier to turn down a bagel when you know it won’t be very good! I definitely think it would be better to learn how to make a chocolate babka than a brisket:)
Agreed. Some of those pathetic looking bagels I have seen in other places are definitely a no thank you!
My husband says that eggs and bagels with a small amount of jelly, just like you like, is the ultimate lunch for him as he eats it several times per week. My daughters boyfriend bought a chocolate babka to our holiday dinner and I told him to slice it as I went about eating all the center filling that fell down as he sliced. I never eat that stuff–I am an oatmeal cookie, banana bread, carrot bread, macaroon, biscotti person–but babka is life altering.
that chocolate filling is just the best.
I could never give up bagels. I had one before and one after my half marathon and they were so satisfying! Although I love the whole wheat ones or the ones with all the nuts and seeds. Yum!
whole wheat bagels were my fave for a really long time. but now I can’t pass up the French toast bagels!
Lunch is not my favorite meal of the day either and I also never know what to eat or am not really hungry enough for anything in particular. I can’t see not ever having bagels in my life. I don’t care if they’re empty calories, carb dense, refined, blah, blah, blah. I eat them because they also make me happy and there’s nothing like a good chewy dense bagel to sink my teeth into!

Yesssss to craving over nutrition. Unless, of course, you only crave chocolatte chips and coffee first thing in the morning for 4 weeks. Then, you know, you might want to cut it out 😉

I love how you approach the bagel craving; I love carbs too, and I’m really thankful not to be bothered by ’empty carbs’ anymore if my body is craving them. 🙂
Curious: How do you celebrate Rosh Hashanah?
rosh Hashanah is the jewish new year and start of like a month of holidays. we go to temple and eat lots of good food like apples, honey, challah etc.
Meredith your lunch is killing me! Looks so good. As for holiday dishes I make all of them now – wonder what my grandparents would think of me paleo-ifying them lol 🙂

I remember EVERY Seinfeld episode! Loove that show. My dog, Regis, is named after Regis Philbin. I know he is a love or hate person. I just used to always watch Regis and Kathie Lee and still love Regis Philbin. Anyway, Regis (Philbin the man, not the dog) STILL watches a Seinfeld episode every night before going to bed. Sorry for the randomness.
My “adult” skill is a berry fruit salad. I know.. it sounds so simple. But instead of buying the $$$$$ ready-made berry salad, I buy all the packages of berries, wash them really well, spin them, dry them in clean pillow cases and then arrive at my friends’ houses with a huge tupperware of fresh berries. I don’t have my own children but my friends’ kids say my berries taste amazing. That makes me feel good of course. Ha. The kid feedback is the true test of honesty I think 🙂
Seinfeld is such a classic! I still watch it too! Jerry’s sister is my parents’ neighbor which was really cool back when the show was super popular!
I felt pretty proud of myself the first year my husband and I made a turkey. I’m polish so now I just have to master the kielbasa and kraut. Oh, that cake, a chocolate fudge filling! I want a slice!
I haven’t made a turkey myself! but I do want to learn to make the babka.
