What I bought recently at Trader Joe’s + Whole Foods

So last week, I pulled into the Trader Joe’s parking lot to learn the power was out and the store was closed.

Well, that was inconvenient.

I prefer to do my food shopping at Trader Joe’s. I get very thrown off my food shopping game when I have to go to another store.

Lately, I have been going to Whole Foods for a few things but not on the regular like I do Trader Joe’s.

The truth is, I don’t even make a grocery list. I just go to Trader Joe’s and figure it out. I don’t actually know what I need unless I am in Trader Joe’s. Yes, I realize this statement makes no sense UNLESS you are a weekly Trader Joe’s shopper. Regular TJ shoppers just have to agree with what I’m saying, or at least understand me!

Whole Foods is close enough to Trader Joe’s so I headed there when the power was out to try to buy a few needed items (not that I really knew what I needed).

I walked in circles but grabbed the following:

  • Japanese Sweet Potatoes
  • Organic Honey Crisp Apples
  • Organic Chick Peas
  • Turkey (for my son which he now decided he doesn’t like but I swear he told me this on purpose to annoy me)
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Organic Romaine Lettuce
  • Whole Foods 365 Barbecue Sauce
  • Whole Foods 365 Organic Light Ranch Dressing
  • Whole Foods 365 Organic Balsamic Vinaigrette

I find myself liking the Whole Foods 365 condiments more than the Trader Joe’s versions as of late. I’ve mentioned the Whole Foods 365 Barbecue Sauce in the past, and now, I like these two salad dressings very much. I don’t even think Trader Joe’s makes a light ranch dressing, right?

Note: I do not buy fat-free salad dressings (or sugar-free or whatever else free they sell these days) but I also try not to buy the very high in fat dressings either. Trader Joe’s does not call their vinaigrettes “light” but they are similar in fat content to the Whole Foods 365 light dressings. I say similar without reciting to you specific stats because I do not study the labels or read the ingredients. I take a quick glance and that’s it.

Thankfully the power was back on at Trader Joe’s when I went the next day. I know I didn’t need a full shop but needed a few things which I figured out while walking around.

Here’s what I bought and why:

I like to microwave the frozen asparagus spears and add them to salads.

More organic romaine lettuce because hi, I live on salads plus organic tomatoes.

I make two cups of coffee with the Organic K-cups every morning.

Chocolate chips because I can’t go a day without them. And, they have to be the semi-sweet chocolate chips from Trader Joe’s – any other kind just tastes weird to me at this point.

A new jar of coconut oil — this jar stays in my bathroom. I use coconut oil to remove my eye makeup AND as a body moisturizer. The best moisturizer there is if you ask me.

Apple cider vinegar. I still add apple cider vinegar to my first glass of water in the morning. Do I experience the proposed health benefits of apple cider vinegar? I haven’t a clue, but I’ve been drinking it daily for so many years that I just continue to do so.

Let’s talk about my favorite seasoning combination at the moment. The Everything But The Bagel Sesame Seasoning is so good on its own, but try throwing in a shake or two of the Onion Salt! I love it on roasted potatoes.

And here’s my salad from the other day using the frozen asparagus. You just quickly microwave the frozen asparagus to defrost it and add it to the salad. Technically, you can even leave the asparagus out for a few minutes to defrost it rather than microwave it as it softens pretty quickly.

In mix:

  • Lettuce (actually, this was a leftover La Piazza house salad from dinner Sunday night)
  • Tomatoes
  • Asparagus
  • Corn (it’s the Trader Joe’s frozen organic corn, I usually microwave it with the asparagus)
  • Chickpeas
  • Avocado
  • Feta Cheese
  • Balsamic Vinaigrette

Maybe next week I’ll share more of my basic yet delicious salad combinations!

  1. LOL shopping at TJ’s based on what you see is a MAJOR MOOD. I very much relate 😉 Also this year I live literally a 5 minute walk from it, so it’s quite dangerous (ahem, I mean wonderful). I literally can go whenever I need to stock up on anything. What a life hahah

  2. OOh you’re salads sound amazing! Love the little tips you give! And totally with you on whole foods sauces/dressings They seem to really hit the spot 🙂 I had a mad Margherita pizza craving this week (4 slices, and I’m sure more to come on the weekend!) Thought if you lol
