Healthy Chinese Food + Other Recent Meals

Before we talk about food today, I should mention to you my running shoe situation which is still a situation.

While I will give the Hokas one more chance, something is telling me that they aren’t going to work out for me.

I’m not sure at this point what will work out for me. A part of me is just waiting for the next Brooks Ghost launch in July but the other part of me really needs a pair of running shoes now. July is a few months from now! What’s even funnier is that a few weeks ago, I briefly considered running this weekend’s Long Island Marathon weekend 10K but thankfully I dropped that idea — I don’t even have running shoes I trust right now!

Anyway, I will keep you posted about which shoes are next, should it come to that.

Recent Meals

I have two lunches and four dinners to share today!

I’ve been making a salad for lunch literally every day during the week while I’m working and haven’t deviated from this plan in months.

The ingredients in my salad lately are basically the same:

  • Romaine
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Chickpeas
  • Onion
  • Roasted Brussels Sprouts
  • Avocado
  • Vegan Dill Dressing

salad

My lunch weekend salad is made by Chopt.

Chopt salad

It had been a long time since I last had Mogu for dinner. Mogu is known for their “healthy Chinese food” and it’s really very good!

I had a vegetable egg roll (which is air fried) and instead of my usual vegetable dumplings, I tried their relatively new Impossible dumplings which are made with Impossible plant-based “beef”.

I also tried Mogu’s brussels sprouts for the first time too. With brown rice, this was a really delicious dinner.

mogu Chinese

I had some leftovers of the brussels sprouts and brown rice plus two of the mildly spicy dumplings so I reheated it all in a pan the next night for dinner with the addition of cauliflower and a fried egg on top.

It’s really not like me to eat eggs but I had a new carton of organic eggs in the house for my son so I figured why not. Seemed like a good dinner idea.

leftover Chinese

I had to go to the post office Monday late in the day which naturally meant I would walk into Villa Monte for a slice of whole wheat vegetable pizza to bring home for dinner.

vegetable pizza

It’s always funny how I go to Trader Joe’s every week and still wonder what I should eat for dinner. I’m so basic that I never buy anything all that different or even desire anything too different.

Sometimes I do vary my beans like in this salad, for example. I used white cannellini beans instead of chickpeas and also varied my potato choice by going with roasted white potatoes instead of sweet potatoes or a traditional baked potato.

White potatoes roast really well when diced up and put in the oven!

I Ordered Something Different At Cheesecake Factory! (plus other recent meals & desserts)

It’s that time of year when no one knows what day it is exactly. While I worked yesterday and Monday, I am off today and for the rest of the week — and I’m really excited about it.

Backing up to late last week, we brought in dinner from The Cheesecake Factory on Christmas Eve. When we aren’t away, we usually have dinner at The Cheesecake Factory for dinner because they are open on the holiday.

Okay, so. You aren’t going to believe this. Even I can’t believe it.

I decided to order the veggie burger for the first time ever. And, this is the first time in oh, over 20 years, that I ordered something instead of a salad.

For normal people, it’s not interesting when they tell you that they ordered something different. For someone like me, it’s a HUGE DEAL.

I think I once shared the story of how I once ordered something other than my favorite salad back in 2000 and regretted it so much that I wanted to do dinner over again. Ever since then, I’ve only ordered a salad and only recently did I try a different salad other than the barbecue ranch salad!

I’ve been talking about maybe trying the veggie burger for a few months now. I finally did it when I was in the right mood!

I really liked it too.

veggie burger

Looks good, doesn’t it?! I did not regret this dinner decision.

veggie burger

I wonder if I will order the veggie burger next time or go back to my usual salad choice! My guess is that I will still order salads most of the time but it’s nice to know that if I want something different, the veggie burger is a great option.

On Christmas, we did our usual Chinese food. While I miss the boneless spareribs as a vegetarian, I do still love and appreciate the steamed vegetable dumplings. Always have, always will.

Of interest; Why Jewish People Eat Chinese Food on Christmas

Last night we had dinner from La Piazza with my parents for my dad’s birthday. I really think La Piazza ranks as one of the best pizza places for grandma pizza in New York.

pizza and salad

Uncle Guiseppe’s has become my new go-to spot for dessert. Rather than get a cake, I opted for a variety of giant cupcakes and mini chipwiches filled with frosting instead of ice cream.

You can always rely on me to bring the best desserts.

cupcakes

I actually reached for the vanilla frosted cupcake first. Not sure who I am but it’s what I wanted! Then I had half of the chocolate frosted – just to make sure I’m still me and still a proper chocolate lover. 🙂

Anyway, I’m working on an end of year top favorites of 2021 post for Friday! See you then.

Recent Eats + Chinese Food + Tried Duchess Cookies

Happy Wednesday! Let’s catch up on recent eats with a quick review of Duchess Cookies.

I love when I have gift cards for The Cheesecake Factory. We’ve been taking out more than dining out again as of late so I picked up the barbecue ranch salad (without the chicken). The onion strings are still my favorite.

bbq ranch salad

Here’s a great article that explains why Jewish people eat Chinese food on Christmas.

Chinese food

With Chinese food leftover from the night before, I made a stir fry for dinner. I added in the leftover cold noodles and brown rice plus had the leftover steamed vegetable dumplings on the side. Delicious.

I stopped for coffee on the way to meet one of my childhood friends over the weekend. It was so good to see her and her family even though it’s still odd to me that meeting at the park in the freezing cold weather is now considered normal to best maintain distance and stay healthy. Who could have ever imagined such a thing only a year ago today, right?

Either way, it was really so great to catch up with everyone and feel somewhat normal for a few hours (even though I couldn’t feel my toes by the time I left).

dunkin donuts coffee

My dad’s birthday was on Monday. Instead of a traditional birthday cake, I showed up with Duchess Cookies. My area is all hyped up about the new Duchess Cookies location so my dad’s birthday gave me an excuse to stop in to give them a try.

I believe there were five types of cookies. The cookies I chose were chocolate chip, s’mores, and funfetti. I was not interested in trying the blue cookie (I think it was called cookie monster) and then there was a green cookie that may have been Christmas-themed. Colored cookies are not my style.

duchess cookies

Here’s a peek inside my cookie box…

duchess cookies

Overall we really enjoyed the cookies. Do I think that Levain Bakery cookies are better and still my favorite? YES. But cookies are a personal opinion, especially when it comes to a traditional chocolate chip cookie. My son said he liked the Duchess cookies more than Levain Bakery. I like a gooey cookie and although these chocolate chip cookies were good and a little chewy, they were not as gooey.

I must say, the S’mores cookie was super delicious. The hint of graham cracker in every bite was just perfect.

duchess cookies

In pizza news, I picked one grandma (corner slice of course) and one slice that I’m not even sure what it’s called but it was so good that I need it again. It had little roasted vegetables possibly in a light balsamic sauce? I think? Regardless, it was so good even without knowing exactly what I was eating.

pizza

Oh, and this is funny. I meant to buy raspberry leaf tea yet somehow, came home with peppermint tea. I swear I was holding the raspberry leaf tea so not sure how this happened! But instead of returning the peppermint tea, I decided to try it and now, I really like it!

peppermint tea

I’m not a huge peppermint fan and can be really picky about my tea (certain teas make me dizzy). Peppermint tea is really good and now I go out of my way to grab a box of organic peppermint tea from Trader Joe’s. Funny how that happens.

Recent Meals: Leftovers + Air Fried Chinese Food + Fudge

Oh, hi. It’s Wednesday already! I have a few recent meals to quickly discuss so let’s get to it…

I think this sort of counts as Thanksgiving leftovers. With leftover roasted Brussels sprouts and asparagus plus sweet potato and mashed cauliflower, I combined it all in a bowl and added chickpeas. It was delicious. Who needs turkey?

plant based bowl

Why do I always forget the name of this vegetable stir fry from Trader Joe’s? I think it’s the miso and brown rice stir fry? It’s located in the refrigerated section. I added chickpeas and avocado. This is nice to have in the house when you aren’t sure what to eat.

Trader Joe's vegetable stir fry

Vegetable slice to go please, not heated up. That’s how I place my order.

veggie pizza

So a new Chinese place opened in our area. Mogu is a little different from the regular Chinese restaurants that are on every corner here in that they air fry the food that is usually fried.

While we still need to try so many more of the menu options, I can tell you that the vegetable egg roll, which was air fried, tasted exactly the same as a regular egg roll. It was so good! The steamed dumplings were really good too, although I don’t think they were steamed any different from the usual. I really need my son to try the sesame chicken and things like that. Maybe I will have that review next week.

I couldn’t resist the fudge st Stew Leonard’s. I walked in for a salad and left with M&Ms fudge. The cute little knife gets me every time.

What I Ate on Saturday + How I Make Overnight Oats

Let’s do today’s food post in the traditional What I Ate Wednesday style by looking at what I ate on Saturday. Saturday was my boardwalk run day during which I ran 10 miles. Some people assume that running 10 miles means you become extra hungry but I didn’t feel any different than any other day appetite wise. The only thing I noticed was that once I was hungry later in the day, I needed to eat even more immediately than usual.

Pre-Run Breakfast

So we already know that I’m still eating the exact same pre and post-run breakfast as I have for years. For this reason, I don’t even bother to discuss my oatmeal anymore. Like, how repetitive would that be? Even more repetitive than talking about pizza, you know?

This oatmeal picture is old but it’s exactly what I had. See, I don’t even need to take new oatmeal pictures to show you what I ate! It’s the same exact bowl (and even the mug is the same!) for years.

Water, coffee in my Henri Bendel mug, and a small amount of oatmeal with (frozen) blueberries and peanut butter. I still go with frozen blueberries over fresh unless somehow someone else brings fresh blueberries into the house. This trend started a few years ago after a stomach virus when I stopped having the ability to look at fresh blueberries.

oatmeal

After my run at the beach, I had oatmeal in a jar just like old times. Cold (cooked) oatmeal with blueberries, strawberries, cinnamon, and peanut butter. I think because it wasn’t as hot for this run, watermelon wasn’t my first craving. Two bottles of water and a cool down walk did happen though before I was ready to eat.

Note Most people like overnight oats in a jar but I like to just have regular oatmeal cold mixed with fruit and peanut butter. My son, however, has recently decided he loves overnight oats so I’ve been preparing it for him at night so it’s ready in the morning.

Here’s how I make traditional overnight oatmeal…

In a bowl, I combine and mix together:

  • 1/3 cup organic old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup organic yogurt (any kind you like, he does plain yogurt but you can do greek yogurt)
  • 1/2 cup organic skim milk
  • berries
  • cinnamon

Place that mixture (covered)  in the refrigerator overnight and then in the morning, I add peanut butter and mix it up.

oatmeal in a jar

A few hours later after I was home and showered, I headed out for errands and shopping, picking up a salad from Chopt. Same Chopt creation as last week which is super easy to reorder when I order online since it’s saved in my account. Romaine, spinach, quinoa, avocado, spicy peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and I think corn with tahini (and bread) and the side.

chops

I had a few pieces of watermelon in the afternoon before deciding on Chinese food for dinner. Gotta love the steamed vegetable dumplings.

Chinese food

Trader Joe’s chocolate chips are still the best chocolate chips. I actually didn’t have as many as usual after dinner, I honestly wasn’t hungry.

Take Out Salads + Chinese Food + City For Bagels

Last week I mentioned the bored with food feeling. And although that bored feeling is still present, I am really doing my best here. Like, the whole Mother’s Day food situation which I described yesterday. The obvious inability to dine out, unable to get the usual breakfasts we like even as take out, and then the organized chaos in the evening trying to pick up dinner was a total test of patience in dealing with what is already months of restrictions.

I try not to let these things bother me and to realize it’s minuscule in comparison to being without a job or sick. BUT still, this prolonged shut down is certainly becoming a test to patience. There’s no doubt that it can feel hard to keep living this way. I’m hopeful things change soon. Yet, I also know we are absolutely last for easing restrictions in my area of New York, so there’s that.

Overall, take out has still been my overall answer to keeping things interesting at home.

I’m finding that buying big salads that give me several meals offers me a chance to not think much about what I want to eat or if I have enough ingredients in the house to make a salad. We won’t even get into the fact that I haven’t been to a grocery store in what, five weeks now? Longer? Who knows anymore.

We did a take out order from La Scala the other day for a change which was a great idea. I ordered two large chopped salads, one garden, and one greek salad. From those two salads, I believe I got five, maybe six meals.

la scala dinner

It was also time to stock the freezer with pizza. La Scala is definitely a top pizza place on Long Island. Like, you can’t go wrong with pizza anywhere in this area but you want an extra special slice? La Scala.

pizza

We also ordered a few grandma slices so I had that with salad one night for dinner.

grandma pizza

I had a few salads like the below picture for lunch, adding chickpeas and avocado to the base salad. I’ve loved having La Scala salad dressing in the house too. Really makes things different for a change and different is what I need right now.

salad

Another pizza and salad combo. Not complaining.

So.

Over the weekend, my son wanted bagels. We were trying to figure out a different bagel store to pick them up from so that we could take a ride to give us something to do. That’s when I suggested we pick up bagels from the city for the change of scenery.  Originally I had wanted to take a ride out to Montauk or the Hamptons but it was just so cold! I’m hoping to do that this coming weekend.

For the first time in my life, the traffic was so light that I went from the upper east side down to the midtown tunnel on one continuous traffic light. Over 40 blocks without stopping? It was so odd.

New York City

Let’s get back to Mother’s Day dinner. I know I left that hanging a little in yesterday’s post. Mother’s Day dinner turned out to be delicious. It was a process to get to our good dinner, that’s for sure. First, my parents had given me gift cards for The Cheesecake Factory so we tried to place that order for dinner. The order wouldn’t go through online. We tried by phone, no one answered. We tried ordering from PF Chang’s (not even sure how we chose that but we did) and that’s when we pulled into the parking lot to see the organized chaos (picture in yesterday’s post – easily 100 people waiting for takeout) and gave up on that order. It was a real mess.

I really just wanted to go home and have a bagel for dinner. I felt defeated. Instead, we decided to order Chinese food for delivery. It was such a delicious idea. The food was perfect. Note my son’s President’s placemat in the picture. He has always loved the Presidents since he’s a little boy and lately, likes to quiz me so we took out the placemat for entertainment.

Chinese food

The cold peanut noodles hit the spot and I never order Chinese food without my usual steamed vegetable dumplings.

Chinese food

One more meal to share today. Remember how I’m trying to preserve my steam fresh vegetables? Well, I’m definitely running low. Sometimes I just don’t have a choice but to eat them. This salad contained a bag of steam fresh vegetables, the little bit of lettuce I had left, roasted sweet potatoes, chickpeas, avocado, and some of the leftover brown rice from the Chinese food. Random, but quite good!

Routine, Real Life & Recent Eats

I tried really hard last week to find my working groove again. You know how hard that can be after a holiday break, right?

But it was time!

It was time to get back into routine, for my son to go back to school and for the holiday season to just be over already and real life to resume.

I found my way back to working from Panera a few mornings last week. So often I have Skype conference calls which means I tend to end up working from home but I like to get out when I can for the change of scenery AND change of coffee selection too.

I am loving my new Henri Bendel planner for this year! It’s not so easy switching planner styles (I have used the Erin Condren Lifeplanner for the last two years) but this one is SO PRETTY.

henri bendel planner and coffee

I feel like I got back on my usual track of posting last week too although I can’t guarantee to myself that it will happen six days a week, every week which is okay. There’s only so much a girl can juggle so I decided to just go with my own flow, whatever that may be.

Relieving my own mental pressure by telling myself to only post when I can truly get it done may make all the difference in allowing me to actually get it done more often. Does that make sense?

How Disordered Eating Can Start was probably my most popular post last week. I know you guys appreciate those types of posts so I do try to write on the topic as often as my brain can come up with the words to share.

I recapped my workouts in yesterday’s post but it’s worth mentioning again that the weather has been so wacky here. One day it’s warm for winter in New York and the next day it’s cold and seriously snowing. Ugh, is it March yet?

snow

Like Saturday’s sudden and basically unexpected snowstorm put me over the edge. I was not in the mood or even prepared to be stuck in the house. My son’s hockey game was quickly canceled in the morning and the snow starting falling basically as I finished my long run but I just couldn’t give in to the weather.

Instead I went to the mall to pretend it wasn’t snowing. I managed to find myself this adorable Cozy Cold Shoulder Sweatshirt at Abercrombie which I do think you need. It’s really cute and doesn’t look frumpy so I say it’s more of a “top” than a sweatshirt.

Eventually I forced myself to go home before the roads were horrendous and glued myself to the television where I watched several episodes of Girlfriend’s Guide To Divorce.

For the longest time I avoided shows on the topic of divorce. Now though, not only can I handle them, I relate and laugh at how real they can be. I even stopped to wonder what it would be like to watch this particular show in my 20’s because no way would I get it. No way in my 20’s did I ever imagine life to be what it is in my 30’s.

If you watch Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce and are in fact divorced, you know exactly what I mean. If you watch the show and aren’t divorced, you may think it’s fiction and over the top but trust me, it is very much reality which in some ways, still seems over the top. But it isn’t, because it’s real life. Sorry to scare you. 🙂

Recent Eats:

I finally got back to some vegetables this week! Although I can totally see that eating serious amounts of produce may really be a thing of the past, I still enjoy a salad or a slice of veggie pizza.

I had this salad at Panera while working one day. Normally I choose an apple with my salad but I went with bread this time around because I am totally off apples right now. Who am I?

Oh, and I had Chinese food. Nothing like steamed vegetable dumplings, that’s for sure.

I finally had a Red Mango parfait too! It had been way too long since my last parfait.

I don’t spend much money these days when I go food shopping because I am not buying as many fresh or frozen vegetables. Please don’t ask me what it is I have been eating instead because I don’t even have an answer for you! Maybe that’s a good thing. Sometimes I wonder why we pay so much attention to what we eat all of the time?

I do still peek around Trader Joe’s to see what’s new and I swear I had never seen these chocolate chip waffles. Have they been out for a while?

Trader Joe's Chocolate Chip Waffles

You would think that with the snowstorm I would have baked something but that didn’t happen. I was absolutely not in the mood which may have something to do with being glued to my Netflix marathon.

Have you tried these chocolate chip waffles from Trader Joe’s?

3 things you did over the weekend?

getting back to routine & back to vegetables (week in review)

When I say last week was a complete blur, I mean last week was a COMPLETE BLUR.

For several days after the Bar Mitzvah, my life felt like just one extended hour of reliving the details of the weekend.

bar mitzvah

I have reached the point where I am tired of talking about the Bar Mitzvah details and I am exhausted from the emotions. The best thing I did last week was throw myself back into my work but that was sort of odd too since I write about weddings, Bar Mitzvah planning, and other big events!

The caterer had sent us home with food and that’s basically what we lived on for meals for several days when we ate at home. We had full pans of grilled vegetables, roasted potatoes, garlic string beans, three kinds of pasta, chicken and a few cakes.

I can’t remember the last time I cooked a real meal or cared much about what was for dinner. I did finally go food shopping at Trader Joe’s after not buying a thing for a good ten days though so I guess I am making progress back to my normal self.

Everyone needs a break, you know?

I didn’t even realize I needed one but after being sick a few weeks ago followed by the adrenaline and excitement of the Bar Mitzvah, it was time for a cooking hiatus.

I have returned to eating my veggies though. Not as many as before but at least they are back in my diet on some level.

I had Chinese food with someone I used to know the other day for lunch. It was a totally random meal for us but we were craving it. We also ordered the steamed vegetable dumplings too (my favorite!) which aren’t pictured because they arrived at the table late.

steamed vegetables and rice

I ordered the vegetables steamed with the sauce on the side for dipping.

I think that I have lost the value of my dollar after planning a Bar Mitzvah. Now that all of the vendors have been paid their obscene amounts of money, I find myself stopping for coffee often and dining out way more during the week than I used to do because the price seems so miniscule.

I used to try to eat lunch at home during the week to save money but now?

Who cares. What’s another ten dollars?

Do you see what this party did to me?!

I had lunch one day at Panera while working. I ordered the house salad with the addition of the cilantro hummus and avocado.

panera salad

My son talked me into Chopt for dinner one night and I couldn’t say no because at least he was eating a salad.

chopt

I also had a delicious Maoz salad the other day but I think I need to write a letter to management because they are charging the same price as usual but have clearly scaled down the size of the salad bowl. Did they think I wouldn’t notice?

Maoz salad

Friday night we returned to Brooklyn for our second Islanders game of the season. We had gone to opening night last Sunday, the night after the Bar Mitzvah, but I didn’t really feel like I was there since I was so super tired.

Speaking of the value of the dollar, my son received a gift card to Stub Hub so he wanted to purchase the tickets for this game and bring a friend. When he wants me to buy the tickets, he selects the seats in the $150 range. When he is buying the tickets, he selects the $6 seats.

Islanders game

Saturday was a crazy rainy day which I mentioned in yesterday’s half marathon training recap. I had been waiting for weeks to clean out the drawers and closets in my son’s room so the stormy weather felt like the perfect opportunity. The kid grows out of his wardrobe like crazy lately!

His hockey game had been canceled for Saturday afternoon but Sunday’s game was on, bright and early.

dek hockey

I’ve been pretty bad at taking pictures of food and things lately. Even worse, sometimes I take a picture for an Instagram story and forget to save it so it’s only around for what, 24 hours?

Unpictured from the week:

Bottomless popcorn at the Islanders game. All of a sudden they informed me that the popcorn bag has free refills throughout the game! I did not know this. Of course I got a refill!

I had the best grandma pizza Saturday with a greek salad. You didn’t think I cooked dinner Saturday, did you?

We had lunch at the diner yesterday and I ordered a veggie burger on top of a salad which is not something I normally order at the diner but it was a good call.

I went to the mall a few times looking for clothes (as usual) but found nothing of interest.

We started writing the thank you cards. I am aiming to accomplish three a day which means this is going to take a while.

And oh, we stopped at Cold Stone Saturday night and I didn’t finish my cup. My son was extremely worried about me for hours after – mom, are you ok? Something must be wrong with you!

I don’t know, I just didn’t want anymore.

WIAW – Chinese Take Out, Snacks & More

You would assume that writing a daily blog would help me to be more aware of what day of the week it is but actually, it’s even more confusing this way!

Between thinking ahead about post topics and when to publish them, photographing food from one day to share a different day and then  sitting down to write a post about something that happened three days ago — I am one confused girl.

Today is Wednesday, December 16, 2015. And now I sound like a school morning announcement.

It’s also What I Ate Wednesday so to confuse me all over again, let’s NOT look at what I ate today (because nothing more than coffee has even happened yet), instead let’s take a look at what I ate on Sunday.

What I Ate Wednesday 12-16-15

Breakfast:

Along with some coffee went a blueberry filled three ingredient pancake….which I didn’t flip very well so it became a scramble in a bowl with peanut butter.

3 ingredient pancake with blueberries

I really like it as a scramble though! I will make it this way more often.

Lunch:

I am not usually home on the weekends for lunch but my son had plans around 12:30 pm and I was getting ravenous for a meal so before I left to take him to his friend’s house, I made myself a salad.

salad

Trader Joe’s Chopped 8 veggie mix (is that what it’s called? I forget now) with roasted broccoli, brussels sprouts, brown rice and chick peas.

Snacks:

I don’t always include my snacks because I don’t really keep track of what I grab throughout the day. This is a pretty good snapshot though of the snacks I most often eat between meals.

snacks

Dinner:

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that Saturday night was Chinese take out night!

We picked up from my favorite place (Foo Luck for local NY readers) which was so good that I wondered why it is I don’t eat Chinese food as often as I once did. I think at some point I switched from craving Chinese food to craving sushi. I am officially back to Chinese.

chinese food

While I no longer eat boneless spare ribs since going meatless four years ago, I do still enjoy my favorite steamed vegetable dumplings, the veggie dishes and the sauces. Love garlic sauce!

We had plenty left for Sunday night’s dinner which made me really happy. Here’s a peak at some of what I ate:

leftover chinese food

I added the chick peas to dinner because I needed to use what was left in the refrigerator.

Dessert:

I had made the cold s’mores recipe earlier in the day so of course I was eating one (actually, two) for dessert.

cold smores
