getting back to routine & back to vegetables (week in review)

steamed vegetables and rice

When I say last week was a complete blur, I mean last week was a COMPLETE BLUR.

For several days after the Bar Mitzvah, my life felt like just one extended hour of reliving the details of the weekend.

bar mitzvah

I have reached the point where I am tired of talking about the Bar Mitzvah details and I am exhausted from the emotions. The best thing I did last week was throw myself back into my work but that was sort of odd too since I write about weddings, Bar Mitzvah planning, and other big events!

The caterer had sent us home with food and that’s basically what we lived on for meals for several days when we ate at home. We had full pans of grilled vegetables, roasted potatoes, garlic string beans, three kinds of pasta, chicken and a few cakes.

I can’t remember the last time I cooked a real meal or cared much about what was for dinner. I did finally go food shopping at Trader Joe’s after not buying a thing for a good ten days though so I guess I am making progress back to my normal self.

Everyone needs a break, you know?

I didn’t even realize I needed one but after being sick a few weeks ago followed by the adrenaline and excitement of the Bar Mitzvah, it was time for a cooking hiatus.

I have returned to eating my veggies though. Not as many as before but at least they are back in my diet on some level.

I had Chinese food with someone I used to know the other day for lunch. It was a totally random meal for us but we were craving it. We also ordered the steamed vegetable dumplings too (my favorite!) which aren’t pictured because they arrived at the table late.

I ordered the vegetables steamed with the sauce on the side for dipping.

I think that I have lost the value of my dollar after planning a Bar Mitzvah. Now that all of the vendors have been paid their obscene amounts of money, I find myself stopping for coffee often and dining out way more during the week than I used to do because the price seems so miniscule.

I used to try to eat lunch at home during the week to save money but now?

Who cares. What’s another ten dollars?

Do you see what this party did to me?!

I had lunch one day at Panera while working. I ordered the house salad with the addition of the cilantro hummus and avocado.

My son talked me into Chopt for dinner one night and I couldn’t say no because at least he was eating a salad.

I also had a delicious Maoz salad the other day but I think I need to write a letter to management because they are charging the same price as usual but have clearly scaled down the size of the salad bowl. Did they think I wouldn’t notice?

Friday night we returned to Brooklyn for our second Islanders game of the season. We had gone to opening night last Sunday, the night after the Bar Mitzvah, but I didn’t really feel like I was there since I was so super tired.

Speaking of the value of the dollar, my son received a gift card to Stub Hub so he wanted to purchase the tickets for this game and bring a friend. When he wants me to buy the tickets, he selects the seats in the $150 range. When he is buying the tickets, he selects the $6 seats.

Saturday was a crazy rainy day which I mentioned in yesterday’s half marathon training recap. I had been waiting for weeks to clean out the drawers and closets in my son’s room so the stormy weather felt like the perfect opportunity. The kid grows out of his wardrobe like crazy lately!

His hockey game had been canceled for Saturday afternoon but Sunday’s game was on, bright and early.

I’ve been pretty bad at taking pictures of food and things lately. Even worse, sometimes I take a picture for an Instagram story and forget to save it so it’s only around for what, 24 hours?

Unpictured from the week:

Bottomless popcorn at the Islanders game. All of a sudden they informed me that the popcorn bag has free refills throughout the game! I did not know this. Of course I got a refill!

I had the best grandma pizza Saturday with a greek salad. You didn’t think I cooked dinner Saturday, did you?

We had lunch at the diner yesterday and I ordered a veggie burger on top of a salad which is not something I normally order at the diner but it was a good call.

I went to the mall a few times looking for clothes (as usual) but found nothing of interest.

We started writing the thank you cards. I am aiming to accomplish three a day which means this is going to take a while.

And oh, we stopped at Cold Stone Saturday night and I didn’t finish my cup. My son was extremely worried about me for hours after – mom, are you ok? Something must be wrong with you!

I don’t know, I just didn’t want anymore.

3 things you did over the weekend?

Ever go through a cooking rut and eat out much more often than usual?

Do you buy coffee often or try to avoid it?

  1. I try to limit myself to buying coffee out once a week. Sometimes I find myself doing it more, other weeks I don’t at all so I guess it evens out. We try to just eat out on Saturdays because I typically prefer home cooked meals anyway, but its nice to take a break from cooking once in awhile!

  2. All that work, all that planning, and it’s finally done and the event is over… it’s no wonder you’re feeling a bit out of sorts. It’s the come down after all that build up and totally normal.

Reducing the salad size without altering the price is not cool, especially when you’ve come to expect a big ass bowl.

I don’t eat out all too often (maybe a couple times of week) although there are certainly weeks that call for a heavier rotation of delivery menus.. I’m thinking the whole first month after the baby was born. It’s good to have kitchen breaks though. It lets us recharge.

Happy Monday and thanks for linking up.

  3. Adam loves buying his Dunkin coffee but I prefer making my own! My appetite was totally killed this weekend not by a stomach thing but actually by a cold that turned into a respiratory infection, so ugh. Even still I vote miserable fever and cough better than a stomach bug any day lol.

  4. I have definitely been there and went through a cooking rut, I feel one coming on pretty soon as it seems I’ve been cooking late dinners the past three weeks. You’re sticking to pretty healthy options though! I love Chopt, but not higher prices.

  5. I don’t like to eat out and practically never do! I feel like it might help me to eat out to get out of my set meals-per-day rut. I might trying to NOT bring lunch to work and at lunchtime think “what are you in the mood for?” I mean it’s definitely convenient and MUCH cheaper when I bring my lunch but changing it up once a week might be good for me.

  6. Well, every two weeks we have just Andrew, me and Callum here for about 4 days so whenever that happens, we eat out for most of our meals. I try to time the grocery shopping so that our fridge and cupboards are stocked up when everyone is here and then dwindles down when everyone leaves for those few days.

  7. Hi!
First thank you SO much for the info on Bar Mitzvah stuff (from last post)….Brady is a huge BLACKHAWKS fan!
    3 weekend things:
    1. Birthday party for the kids
    2. Dinner with friends
    3. Hot yoga class

So funny about your cooking rut. The week before last I literally was TERRIBLE. I think we picked up food at least 3 times during the week. I never do that. So this past week I vowed to make up for it and cooked ALMOST every night. I enjoy cooking–I despise cleaning up!!

My coffee addiction is real. I buy a cold brew at the grocery store, then I add my collagen peptides and MCT oil…..it’s rich and creamy and delicious. I am so addicted that I rarely buy coffee out unless traveling etc!

  8. Sucha beautiful pic of you from the party!

Three things I did over the weekend:
-First double dig run since the Chicago Marathon!
    -Watched the Cubs win!
-Carved a pumpkin … Which I haven’t done in a VERY long time!
