For like half a second yesterday morning, as I was stepping outside for my long run, I was slightly afraid. It was that same feeling that used to keep me from leaving the house in the early morning to go the gym in the days that followed September 11, 2001.
Watching the terrible news coverage Friday night (and all night really because I am one of those people who gets glued to news coverage) definitely affected me even though it is much worse right now for the people of Paris, France.
So sad, so terrible.
I did go for my run and I even went to the mall yesterday, only realizing after the fact that maybe I shouldn’t have gone? Maybe I shouldn’t have walked around focusing solely on enjoying my favorite parfait while window shopping?
Maybe the mall is a soft target? Maybe I need to reconsider how often I drive into the city? The Midtown Tunnel?
Should I be frolicking around Manhattan so carefree all of the time?
Do I still take the train to see my Islanders play in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center?
The answer is yes. We cannot let the bad people out there who want to ruin our freedom and way of life get to us. So as hard as it is sometimes, as often as I want to hide under the covers (I love hiding under the covers especially as I torture myself by watching CNN at night), we must continue to live our lives.
And run. We must continue to run.
I had a great week of running actually. It was one of those weeks where each morning you just feel like running to run, not for hitting paces, accomplishing workouts or following plans. Just to run.
Monday – 7 Miles & Yoga
It was colder than it has been and I probably should have warmed up a bit more during the first mile because I definitely went out too fast and felt the effects. It took me a few more miles until I found my groove and by that time, it was time to go home!
Tuesday – Pure Barre Mile High 2 DVD & 6 Miles
Definitely felt more warmed up today thanks to the 35 minutes of Pure Barre first.
I had fun with this run and made up a new speed interval workout without even trying. I will share it soon, it will be great for the treadmill!
Wednesday – Pure Barre Studio Series 4 DVD & 6 Miles
I skipped around the Pure Barre DVD, leaving out the upper body workout section and only focusing on the legs, abs and stretching.
6 random miles (avg. pace 9:14) in the rain. Why does running in the rain feel so good?
Thursday – 7.30 Miles
This was just a great, solid this-is-why-I-run run. No plan or structure just running where it felt good.
While I was running, I noticed the dog walkers holding umbrellas. Was it raining? I hadn’t noticed.
Friday – Pure Barre Pure Results Online Workout
I feel so repetitive already preaching Pure Barre but seriously, you just gotta try it.
I recommend every Pure Barre DVD I use but this Pure Barre Pure Results online workout is $19.99, giving you access for one year.
It’s killer in a good way, incorporate weights during the ab sections and is 10 minutes longer than an actual Pure Barre class.
You can skip around to the various sections if you want but you are totally capable of doing all of the exercises. You will see the results too <- must be why they call it Pure Results.
Saturday – 14 Miles / avg. pace 8:54
I really can’t complain about this run even though I want to say it was crazy windy (up to 40 mph sustained winds I think) and I had some cramps (thanks time of the month, thanks) which weren’t bad enough to kill me but annoying enough at various points to try to slow me down.
I stopped for the bathroom twice but still enjoyed the fresh air and completed what I set out to do.
Sunday – Not sure? Maybe a short run?
It’s so supposed to be nice out today with no wind in the forecast so I have a feeling I will head out for a few easy miles.

Do you like to run in the rain?
Best thing you ate so far this weekend?
Favorite post-workout meal lately?
My young adult son lives in NYC, but only comes home everyother week because he is on a project in Lisbon, Portugal for the past three months(he’s an investment banker). He travels each weekend around Europe with his girlfriend or friend. Each weekend. He was in London last weekend and this weekend was going to go to Paris but went to Copenhagen instead. Weirdly, his friends whole family resid s in Paris and thankfully they are ALL we’ll!!!! We can’t hide from the realities of our world by restricting our lives to the point these incidents make us live in fear but we should make smart choices.
I feel the same way – I went out for my long run in Central Park yesterday morning and the reservoir was so crammed with people, for a few seconds I wondered if it was safe to be so out there in the open in a beautiful area where people were enjoying the day, just like in Paris. But we have to live our lives.
I definitely know what you mean but you are right- we have to continue living our lives.
I don’t mind running in the rain as long as its not too cold! It was really windy for my run yesterday; those gusts definitely make things feel much harder!
Such a good week of running for you and so nice to be able to enjoy it and for it not to feel like something you “have to” do. I always think I run better on days where I’m enjoying it, likewise, I run better when I’m enjoying it. Hopefully more weeks of this ahead! Great looking parfait too, hope you enjoyed 🙂
Not a fan of running in the rain! Cold I can do, rain I hate. Sat was great for running even with the wind, it’s my favorite weather 🙂
Great job on the mileage! Are you training for anything?!
Running in the rain … So bittersweet! I always dread it before I go outside but then during/after, I feel so happy!
Best thing I ate all weekend: Hm … The peppermint bark from William Sonoma! I LOVE that stuff!
