It’s finally time for a complete Gigabody review!

If you have been paying attention to my Weekly Workout Recaps each Sunday for the past month or so, you may have noticed me mention a variety of Gigabody videos on more than one occasion.

I never thought workouts from home would ever be something that I would not only enjoy but be doing on a regular basis.

Once I made the decision a few months ago to make use of Pure Barre DVD”s instead of paying studio pricing,  my workout world has changed for the better!

At home workouts, which absolutely complement my running, have now become a must-have in my routine and it is so simple to implement that I wish I would have started sooner!

A little bit of background about Gigabody:

What I Really Like:

So many options!

Cardio, HIIT, Kickboxing, Dance, Strength, Yoga, Stretching and Barre routines…see what I mean? A ton of workout choices available to you whenever you want them.

Each workout type offers a variety of video options depending upon your level, interest and time available.

I love the variety of video lengths because it allows you to choose what you have the time to do and also allows you to combine different workouts, possibly combing strength and cardio all in one session.

Anytime Anywhere!

You have access to your workouts 24/7 from your computer which means you can easily do your workout from any room of your house or if you are traveling, from your hotel room.

I am realizing this means I can keep up with my barre routines while I am in Disney in a few weeks. Hmm. Didn’t really think about that.

My son even showed me how to get the videos to work through the television (the Play Station4 and modern technology fascinates me) so that the workouts were appearing all big on my television screen.

For $8.99 a month, it’s a steal.

Think about how many workout routines this is giving you access to at any time for pennies a day.

Prenatal Routines as well as options for the kids.

I obviously didn’t try out the prenatal routine but my son got himself moving with the children’s fitness video.

He didn’t love it but he did like trying out some of the easier kickboxing routines which totally kept him busy, focused and the best part, tired him out in a healthy way.

Tired boys = Happy parents

What I Don’t Like So Much:

So many options.

I know that I just listed this as a pro but at first, I was honestly a bit overwhelmed.

I realize that it’s necessary for a workout website to offer a variety of options but at first glance, I saw so many workouts that I didn’t know what to do first and maybe, someone else would feel the same way and then be turned off and do nothing.

They do offer you the option of selecting a specific workout plan based upon what you are looking to achieve which gives you a calendar of your workouts and when to do them but I didn’t see that at first and then didn’t opt to do so because I like creating my own thing.

Sometimes the videos froze while I was mid-pose or mid-set  and that was really annoying!

I don’t know if it was my internet connection or the Gigabody website but it happened to me way too often.

It was super frustrating, especially when I was limited on time or just in my groove.

And, sometimes, once I was able to get the video to work again? It started over from the beginning rather than where I left off when it froze.

When you follow workout routines from a video, you do not have a live instructor to correct your pose and position.

It’s important to slow down and attempt to get the positions correct because no one is there to show you otherwise and you don’t want to get hurt.

Oh and this is important– I don’t like wearing shoes in the house and some of the workouts really require footwear beyond your grippy barre socks.

You need to remember that. Just because you are home, your feet need to be protected.

My Overall Opinion:

The barre videos were my favorite (shocker, I know). After a few weeks, those were the only routines I selected to do.

It’s really easy to get to the workouts you like because the routines you frequently use are listed in the side bar which is nice so you don’t have to go searching every time.

*While I do prefer Pure Barre if you asked me to choose, I do like incorporating both styles of barre in my routine and will probably renew my Gigabody membership when my trial expires.

I really don’t like getting sweaty and jumping around in my house therefore kickboxing, HIIT and step-type videos were not for me.

And, as usual, I didn’t want to do the strength-training videos either. It’s not my thing even though I did try to make it my thing by testing them all out but nope, it isn’t going to happen.

Gigabody is a terrific option for people who can’t always get (or don’t even want to go) to the gym — perfect for moms, those with a tough work schedule, people who hate the gym and those of us in the frigid winter climates who often get snowed in.

There’s no excuse for not working out when you have the access.

However, overmotivated (or those recovering from exercise addiction and/or eating disorders) should probably NOT have access to workouts 24/7.

I will get more into what I think overmotivation is  in another post but what I will say is that having workouts available to you all of the time, especially when some routines are only 11 minutes, may trigger you to feel as though there’s no excuse to not squeeze in a quick workout when you really don’t need it.

  1. I would love to give this a try! I was just actually looking into pure barre studios and OMG they are expensive!! I do want to try some studio classes to make sure I am doing it right, but after that it would be a good option to be able to do it at home! I also like that there is such a range of workouts.

  2. I find that having a tonne of options is a little overwhelming for me as well. This is why I can’t even look at my Pinterest recipe boards — I wouldn’t even know where to start 😆 And I don’t think having 24/7 access would really make a difference to me. I mean… there are tonnes of workout videos available online anyways… and the fact of the matter is that if people are struggling with a hardcore exercise addiction, they’ll find ways to exercise regardless of if they have videos available.

  3. I could use this right about now. I am staying at a hotel with a subpar workout room (the treadmill squeaks) and I need some type of workout that will give me a good sweat but doesn’t need equipment 😦 You should link this up with my Tried it Tuesday post today! It would be a great addition. Happy Tuesday!

  4. I’d love to try Gigabody and especially the barre videos. With the colder weather, it’d be great to have an at-home option that will still motivate me to do that core work!

  5. I can see the amount of options being both good and bad. I’m just starting to get into online workouts and already I’m wondering, uh, which should I pick? Without a lot of helpful reviews you might not know it something is for you. For me, winter is the time I need options like this though!

    1. I am glad I am not the only one overwhelmed! I mean, it’s fine to start and stop the routines if we don’t like them but I hate doing that. Once I got really familiar with the site I was able to figure out what I loved and what wasn’t for me.

  6. Ever since you started talking about it, I thought this might be a great idea. I don’t live/work close enough to a gym to make it work for me, so I’ve been meaning to try something more at home. I’m fascinated with the thought of Barre and would love to try it out!

  7. I would love to win this and be able to try out so many workouts! It’s way too cold to run right now (for me) so this seems like a great option!

    1. Wow – I am so glad to know that it happened to someone else too! Not that I want us to have bad workouts lol – I just didn’t know if it was my internet connection. Hopefully Gigabody can do something to fix it.

    2. Hi Janelle – what kind of device/browser were you connecting from? Just want to isolate whether it was video player related (which differs between mobile & desktop) or network connection issues. Thanks!

      1. Ok, thanks! That’s what I design on & use myself to do workouts. In that case, it was likely network issues causing buffering. I’m adding logging to get more diagnostics when this happens. We use one of the most popular web video players, and it has its strengths and weaknesses. Network issues can cause buffering for sure. Thanks for the info!

  8. Thanks for the thoughtful review. Great suggestion on being able to save your place in a video. I’m definitely going to add that!
Also, I’ve been thinking about possible wizard options for recommending videos for those not sure where to start. Is that the kind of thing you think you’d use?

    1. Hmm, I don’t think I meant to say saving a place in a video would be awesome but now that you say it, it really would be! like some of the longer barre routines – I would love to find certain spots for certain exercises just so could do only those…I think what I meant was when the videos would freeze and then unfreeze, a lot of the time they went back to the beginning rather than picking up where I left off. A wizard would be an awesome option – allowing people to use it to explore and understand the site and set things up or close the option if they want to figure it out on their own…And as for the video freezing thing, I use Window’s 8 (or maybe a higher update now, not sure) with windows explorer on my laptop and a few times through the PS4 internet connection thing (I am not that tech savvy so my explanations may sound weird.)

      1. Thanks for the detailed feedback! 🙂
I’m incrementally adding chapter markers to the videos (longest ones first where folks are most likely to want to skip around). These let you move between different marked points in the video (e.g. jump to cooldown). I just added them to Barre Breakthru, thanks for the feedback. Definitely agree, it’s really nice to skip to or past particular segments! And the saving-the-place feature is of course, just an elegant recovery feature for when the page has to be reloaded. All makes sense! Thanks!

  9. This looks amazing! As someone who loves barre, but has trouble with the cost and time (I travel weekly for work), I would love to be able to do online classes.
