#NYTough Plus P&G Giveaway!

#NYTough

As soon as my son gets on the bus this morning for school, I am off to the city for the Fitness Magazine Meet & Tweet.

I am super excited to attend once again this year but the stress of driving through midtown rush hour traffic in the rain and somehow making it home in time for my son is certainly on my mind.

City driving is not for everyone. It tests your patience in a way that only an active toddler who hasn’t napped because they have an ear infection can rival.

So get the timing of this —

Proctor & Gamble is currently running a promotion called #NYTough!

I am really picky when it comes to the brands and topics I talk to you about but when I was approached to talk about what makes me #NYTough AND provide you with a giveaway, I was eager to get this post going!

#NYTough

I knew exactly what I wanted to say as soon as I heard the subject to the point where this post wrote itself in my head within a matter of minutes.

#NYTough

As a lifelong New Yorker, of course I am tough. You just have to be.

I can drive around Manhattan weaving in and out of traffic simultaneously creating my own lane, hail a cab in the rain and get to it before you can and walk the streets of Times Square at midnight after getting a manicure (open 24 hours!) and shopping the many levels of Forever 21 (open till 2:00 am!).

I have no issue admitting though that part of this toughness comes the sheltered New-York-is-the-best-and-only-place-to-live mentality.

New Yorkers are like that. We tend to think that life outside of this area doesn’t exist and even if you try to say that it does, it just isn’t as good.

At least that was my mindset as a kid.

I was so sheltered in my thinking, so out of touch with the rest of the country that even when visiting other regions, they weren’t the same which translated into “aren’t as good” and I couldn’t wait to get home.

Home to New York.

Times Square

Where life moves really fast, the roads are tricky to travel and if someone you don’t know says hello to you, you assume something is wrong with them because it cannot possibly be that they are just being friendly.

It’s the truth. Rarely does someone just say hello, even if you do know the person. Sometimes, you pretend that you don’t.

Do you know I couldn’t even leave New York for college? I thought I could do it but changed my mind three days before I was supposed to leave for the University of Delaware.

I remember thinking,

“Okay, there is a Friendly’s down the street from my dorm but this place is too different for me. It isn’t New York. My roommate is from some place I have never heard of, she doesn’t know what rainbow cookies or black & whites are and I don’t know what to do with that.”

By the way, did I mention Crumbs Bake Shop reopened this week?!

I realize that my thought-process from when I was 18 sounds insane but I was a kid and didn’t know any better.

I don’t regret my decision to stay in New York for college at all because I don’t think I was ready or mature enough to leave but I do wish I wasn’t so sheltered in my thinking for so many years of my life.

As I got older, I came out of my sheltered thinking and learned to appreciate Chicago-style pizza, the beauty of San Diego and the warm weather that happens year round in Florida.

I realized that people in other states are just as cool as New Yorkers, if not cooler, because they often lack that edge and unapproachable nature which so many seem to walk around with here.

I have grown up to realize that as much of a New Yorker as I am (like really, one word out of my mouth and you know where I am from), I am no different from my running friends down south, out west or up north.

We all look forward to our post run meals, enjoy shopping at Trader Joe’s, have issues resisting the Whole Foods Food Bar, live in our compression socks, and without even having this discussion, I am pretty sure we all smell after a run if we don’t use deodorant.

#NYTough

I swear by Secret Clinical. Really, I do.

Not because P&G is offering us this giveaway but because I find it works the best for me.

I only knew it worked the best when I attempted a different brand because it was on sale only to realize I smelled a few hours after applying it under my arms.

Never again will I switch my deodorant from Secret Clinical and never again will I live a sheltered New York life because there is so much more out there than a rainbow cookie or big black & white from a New York bagel store.

But those cookies are really good and you just can’t get them anywhere else and if you think that you can I assure you they aren’t the same so if come to visit I will be really nice and take you to try one.

  1. You are making me miss the East coast!!! I keep hinting to steve that we need to go back and visit my beloved philly, but he is not keen. I will have to live through you for now, as NY is the ultimate east coast! Sounds like a lot of fun, but favorite cookie?! Thats just mean. I am gonna say a chewy, gooey white chocolate chip with m&ms and a big hunkin blob of vanilla frosting!

  2. I can definitely say that I am #NYTough. Raised in Atl, College in VA, Grad school in Manhattan, now in Chicago, I still love that damn city. And I plan on running through it one of these years!

  3. you’re definitely right about the New Yorker mentality — everyone I know that lives there thinks it’s the best and only place to live. I haven’t been since I was like… 5 years old… so I can’t exactly speak to that, but the city sounds like it would probably eat me alive. I’m a quiet Canadian. I don’t know what black and white cookies are (or at least I didn’t until you told me), and even my city of 1.something million is getting too big for me…

    1. And I still don’t understand and cannot accept how you never head of a black and white cookie. I mean, that makes the Seinfeld episode where he “united the world” by taking a bite from both sides make zero sense to you if you saw it on television.

  4. I love this post! I will always be a New Yorker at heart. I forced myself to go to college in MD but my roommate was from NYC (we were randomly placed together) and I think like half of the student body was from NY. I also knew several people from my high school who were also going to Loyola, which made the adjustment easier. But it was still SO different from NY. I will never really feel like a Marylander because for so many years I was completely under the belief that no where else could ever be as good as NY. It’s really weird to go back now and see things from a different perspective!

  5. I’m not a new yorker, but i am currently doing my phd. dealing with that for five years…you manage to get quite tough!

  6. I always thought it was the weirdest thing when I travelled to New York a few years ago and every one gave me weird looks when I tried to say hello. People aren’t the friendliest eat here in California either, but they do say hello for the most part though. I LOVE New York though. It’s so much fun.

  7. I had the same thoughts and feelings about living in NY as a kid, but was really pleasantly surprised going away to college. My first week, my roommate’s friends (all PA people) were so nice, cool, laid back that at first I was really paranoid and just didn’t get it. I assumed they hated me and were acting weird around me because of it. Slowly I started realizing what it actually means to just be a genuinely nice and cool person! But yes, my first thought when someone says hi to me randomly is “what the heck is wrong with THIS person?” That probably won’t change as long as I’m still living in the NY area 🙂

    1. Ha. I am so glad we can relate and have the saw view on this lol. You just validate for me what I always say! I bet we know a lot of people in common by the way, what year did you graduate high school and/or college? You will have to tell me.

  8. I love p&g, I am a very independent person, I don’t really plan on living in New York but my sister does and I go a lot and am perfectly capable of having an awesome day by myself and am good with directions and everything!

  9. I have never been to NY but it is on my bucket list. I want to experience that fast paced lifestyle and embrace it! I love P&G products especially Febreze and you can’t go wrong with Tide : )
    Thanks for this awesome giveaway!

  10. I love this entry and your Love for New York. I am from NY but not the city…upstate. I have only been to NY twice in my life and it was only JFK airport as a child. I would love to go to New York sometime.

    1. You totally need to make the trek down! How far up are you, like Buffalo far? It’s funny because whenever I have been that far upstate, it is weird to think it is technically still New York because it seems so far away.

  11. I definitely consider myself one tough cookie… just generally independent and have a hard time asking people for favors (not always a good thing!). Oh.. and my favorite cookie? Definitely oatmeal chocolate chip. Warm. Gooey. Mmm.

  12. I’m NY Tough because I spent a summer there at School of American Ballet at age 13 (with mom too) but we slogged through the not good areas many blogs so I could get to the studios.

My bro lives in the East Village and for the first 5 years he was intolerable to have around. He would come home to the house in small town PA and be an anxious, annoying monster. He’s mellowed in his age and years there and actually is fun to be around now (:

Crumbs is apparently banking on it’s new bagel/croissant (“baissant”) thingy…sounds like a yummy winner to me (:

  13. I am not a New Yorker but I am tough because I survived physical therapy graduate school and I was in cross country in high school.

  14. I love your comment about everyone loves shopping at TJ’s – so so true!

I am the biggest homebody. I think my parents never thought I would leave home when I was younger. To be honest I didn’t think I would either. To all our surprise I went to college out of state and after graduation moved to Chicago. Both my older brothers (who are not big home bodies) went to school in state and now live within 5 blocks of my parents. Funny how everything works out. I am still the biggest homebody and love love love Detroit! I will always cheer for them!

    1. That is quite funny. So many people I know went away to school only to move back to their hometown! I didn’t leave NY/Long Island but I did leave my hometown although I am only twenty minutes away lol.

  15. I”ll admit it’s a bit hard for me to relate to NYTough because I am a Southern girl, born and raised through and through. Ha! But have a whole other type of toughness down here! So I’d say I’m still pretty tough in a Southern girl, kick butt kind of way. 😉

  16. I live in the South so I don’t think I can ever be NYTough, sorry. But I think every geographical area has tough things you go through and undersatnd just because you live there.

My favorite P&G product… tide detergent!
