If I didn’t already qualify for Mother of the Year, I secured the top spot last night for sure.
Not only did I take the boy last night (on a school night) to the Islanders/Penguins playoff game, I excused him from Hebrew School, I sported an Islanders T-shirt in support of the orange and blue AND I sat in those uncomfortable stadium seats for several hours.
If you find stadium seats comfortable 48 hours after running a half marathon, I envy you.
We took this picture of ourselves while waiting in line with 16,000 other people who needed a restroom.
It seems lately I like to take photos while waiting in lines. At least it wasn’t a porto potty.
The game was amazing. I am so glad he got to experience Islanders playoff hockey, especially a win.
Playoffs don’t happen often for us Islanders fans. It was really a special night.
A night that didn’t get us home until 11:00 pm. On a school night. Good luck to me getting him up for school.
As I sat in those uncomfortable seats standing ever so often to avoid the stiff knee syndrome, I decided it might be best that my race calendar is looking quiet for the next few months.
Running two half marathons in the last three weeks might be enough for now. I am ready to get back into my weekly running routine rather than taper weeks and recovery weeks.
My mind was set and ready for a nice, easy 5 mile run yesterday morning. My hamstrings felt otherwise. I tried to run but it wasn’t worth it. And when I say tried, I really gave it a nice effort. I did the jog a few, stop and stretch a few, jog a few, stretch a few.
It really wasn’t working. I ended up with a mish mosh of a workout which included walking, jogging, a quick visit inside with the elliptical machine, arm weights and more walking while catching up with phone calls.
I am actually feeling great today, nothing stiff or sore or tired so hopefully something fabulous is on my workout horizon.
I really want to thank everyone for their comments yesterday. I really appreciate all of the support regarding yesterday’s post about the Kids Fun Run.
Sometimes I feel bad when I preach to my son the importance of the balanced diet and the focus on nutrient dense foods. I try to be a cool mom but I just can’t sit back and let him snack on muffins, donuts, and pound cakes (that don’t even look tasty) at 11:00 am after running. In fact, I can’t sit back at any time of day when it comes to his nutrition.
It is so nice to know I am not alone in my views of kids nutrition and the use of Ronald McDonald in conjunction with children’s health/fitness activities.
In other sort of related news, I read an interesting article the other day on the Runner’s World website that I want to share with you:
Weight Loss Motivation Differs By Age
The article discusses the difference in weight loss goals between young adults and older adults. The younger adults were solely focused on losing weight for appearance and social life purposes, while the older adults were focused on losing weight for their health.
I don’t know about you, but this TOTALLY rings true for me. Looking back, as recent as even a few years ago, I ate according to calorie counts. I cared more about eating to not gain weight/weight management rather than about eating foods packed with nutrients, antioxidants and disease fighting compounds.
I really don’t count calories anymore. I focus on eating a mix of clean foods containing complex carbs and protein and always load my plates with an abundance of fruits and vegetables in order to feel AND look good.
I try my best to instill this way of thinking into my son so that he too can grow up without counting the numbers, without even using a scale and just focus on eating a variety of nutrient dense foods in order to look and feel his best.
It is truly amazing how many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals and diseased fighting compounds are packed into fresh fruits and vegetables.
Which type of eater are you? Are you young at heart and only focused on losing weight for your appearance OR do you worry about your heart and eat a healthy diet to ensure good health?
Go Mom of the year! 🙂 Sounds like a fun game. I feel for ya – those runs that just aren’t happening are a wee bit frustrating. Good job still getting in a workout! I would have given up! And I also echo your food thoughts. I don’t count calories either, I don’t care about fat and all that either. I just eat what’s healthy and good – like TONS of veggies and some fruit! I don’t eat meat, so it’s tougher to get some protein in, but I do what I can with legumes and other natural sources.
I hear you on the protein, it is harder to get enough in for me as well but I do the best I can!
I’m sure your son thought it was the coolest thing ever that he not only got to skip Hebrew school but also go to a major sporting event on a school night. I always loved when my parents occasionally allowed for adventures like that. And as for my eating type I am both. Of course I care about my physical appearance, but having a science background and working in cancer research, I am ridiculously concerned with how my body will age. And while I don’t eat healthy foods 100% of the time, i definitely make an effort to eat well and to avoid certain foods high in nitrates and other potential carcinogens.
I definitely eat to ensure good health, but I am obviously concerned about my appearance (I am a woman- ha!).
You totally get the mother of the year award! Looks like so much fun!
You definitely are a great Mom! 🙂 I try to eat for health but I definitely do so for appearance too. I think it’s about finding that balance.
Hah, love that cartoon about food labels. So true!
Hello, nice to find you! Thank you for including Earthgiven Kitchen in your blogroll! Love the fish background.
